How XERF Works

XERF, made by Cynosure Lutronic, is a monopolar radiofrequency treatment used for non-surgical skin tightening on the face and neck. It runs two frequencies, 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz, and the depth settings are shallow, middle, and deep. Heat prompts the body to build new collagen, so results develop gradually over the following months.

Consultation. Your goals, treatment areas, and health history are reviewed. Preparation usually means limiting sun exposure and pausing retinoids and exfoliants for several days beforehand.

  2. 02

Treatment. A thin layer of gel goes on the skin, and the handpiece works across each area in sequence. Sessions take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area.

  3. 03

Recovery and retreatment. Mild redness or swelling can follow, and how long it lasts varies. Follow the written aftercare instructions you are given. Dr. Cohen typically recommends a minimum of two sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.

Who XERF Helps Most

XERF suits mild to moderate sagging along the jawline, cheeks, and neck in people who are in generally good health. Our plastic surgeon in Orange, CA, can compare it with a facelift or neck lift and help you decide which approach matches your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does XERF hurt?

Most patients find it comfortable. Expect warmth or light tingling as the skin heats. Speak up if an area feels too warm, since the cooling and energy settings can be adjusted.

How soon will I see results?

Some firming may be visible right after a session. Most of the change comes from new collagen, which builds gradually over the following months. Results differ from one patient to the next.

Who should not have XERF?

XERF is not for you if any of these apply:

  • A pacemaker or another implanted electrical device
  • A metal implant that interferes with the energy path
  • Permanent filler or facial implants
  • An active infection in the area
  • Pregnancy or nursing

Tell the office about recent neurotoxin, filler, or facelift surgery, and about any history of cold sores or keloids.
